The first Quentin Tarantino masterpiece to have the director fight

Even masterpieces are sometimes born out of absolute nightmare situations. This also applies to the bank robber chamber game Reservoir Dogs. During the shoot, director Quentin Tarantino clashed so badly with his actor Lawrence Tierney that that a fist fight ensued.

On TV: Masterpiece by Tarantino getting applause after the set fight

Reservoir Dogs revolves around a group of bank robbers stuck in a warehouse after a failed job. The whole action was organized by career criminal Joe Cabot (Tierney).

Lawrence Tierney in Reservoir Dogs

Tierney’s drinking problems and physical altercations have been known in Hollywood for decades, as the Hollywood Reporter writes. The Guardian quotes Tarantino on the making of Reservoir Dogs:

[Tierney war] a fucking lunatic [und] should have been sedated. He questioned every part of the shoot. After a week everyone hated him. Then we got into a fistfight in the last twenty minutes of the first week. I fired him and the whole crew applauded me. But I thought, “That’s it for my film career.”

In the end, Tarantino was allowed to continue his shoot and later even got along with Tierney, before the actor passed away in 2002 (via Far Out Magazine). Reservoir Dogs is now considered a terrific indie film that introduced the director to a wider audience.
