The first 100 electric Lexus opts for a rectangular steering

The Yoke steering wheel will not be reserved for Tesla, Lexus also intends to surprise with the main control of its future car. The RZ 450e is the first 100% electric model from the Japanese brand, it will be revealed this month and will therefore have a rectangular steering wheel. Toyota’s premium subsidiary’s SUV is due to be officially unveiled on April 20, but an image of its interior is already circulating and making a lot of noise.

Like in F1 (and like Tesla)

We see a rectangular steering wheel, largely inspired by those equipped on the F1 or, more recently, the Yoke revealed by Tesla for its new Model S and Model X. In the RZ450e, the rectangular steering wheel is part of a very enveloping, which gives the impression of being at the controls of a fighter plane. This rectangular steering wheel is not a total surprise insofar as Toyota, the parent company of Lexus, had already planned to offer a similar steering wheel on its first electric model, the BZ4x. However, on the latter, the “One Motion Grip” (probably a Japanese translation of the word Yoke) is only offered as an option.

Unlike Tesla’s Yoke, Toyota’s rectangular steering wheel, and therefore probably that of Lexus, is connected to electric steering, with no mechanical connection between the wheels. So the gear ratio can be calculated and corrected for speed, which will likely make it more manageable than its Tesla equivalent. Indeed, thanks to this system, even at low speed, the driver will not need to multiply the arm movements to turn the wheels, these offering a more advantageous angle.

With the Yoke, did Tesla launch a new fashion in the automobile? For now, only Toyota is convinced.
