The twist: Mercedes ditches hybrid – brings back the V8

The twist Mercedes ditches hybrid brings back the V8

New Mercedes-AMG C 63 SE Performance replaced a 4-liter V8 with 510 horsepower to a plug-in hybrid with a four-cylinder engine and an electric motor with a total of 680 horsepower.

However, Mercedes has realized that their customers are more interested in a distinctive driving experience rather than impressive performance figures.

Now British Autocar reports that Mercedes will ditch the high-performance four-cylinder piece in favor of a V8.

New model, new tag

It is said to be the upcoming Mercedes-AMG CLE 63, which will get a 4-liter V8 with up to 585 horsepower.

Autocar has spoken to senior executives at Mercedes who confirm that the Germans will offer the V8 engine going forward.

That said, CLE 63 prototypes have been seen out on the roads with hatches. Whether these will be put into production remains to be seen.

The new C 63 has been criticized by both the public and the media for its decidedly uninspiring powertrain. We’ve tested it at home and can say that, while it offers incredible performance, the powertrain feels sluggish at times and not beefy enough to carry the AMG stamp.

Impaired sales

Demand in both the US and Europe has declined for the new C 63, although the numbers are not a total disaster. The model has also not started to be sold in a number of markets.

It is not the first time that there has been speculation as to whether Mercedes will de facto reintroduce its famous V8 or not. The latest official statement from the Germans themselves suggests that they will stand by their decision.

This time, however, the news comes from high-ranking individuals at Mercedes-AMG.

Having said that, things change quickly in the car industry and you should never say never. The world premiere of the new CLE 63 – expected later this year – will determine whether the V8 disappears or remains.
