The fights in the DLC of Final Fantasy 16 were my highlight, and as a player of Final Fantasy 14 I was particularly happy about one

The JRPG Final Fantasy 16 gets two more DLCs: Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide. So far only the first of the two expansions is available, but fans of Final Fantasy 14 in particular should take a closer look at the DLC.

What is the DLC about?

  • So-called twilight crystals suddenly appear that don’t last as long as normal crystals. They suddenly flood the black market as inferior goods.
  • Clive investigates the origin of the Twilight Crystals and ends up with a group that mines the crystals in a tower in Rosaria.
  • Together with Joshua and Jill, Clive enters the tower and finds that a lot of enemies are waiting for him there. He tries to find out the secret of the tower and the twilight crystals.
  • What does the DLC offer? In Final Fantasy 16, a tower full of monsters suddenly appears in which you have to fight your way from floor to floor. Clive and his entire Esper arsenal are at your disposal.

There are different enemies lurking in the tower that look different than in the main game. Although some monsters were “recycled” and their techniques adopted, they were at least given a new look.

Well, does the opponent look familiar?

Among all the enemies, the intermediate bosses particularly stand out. As a Final Fantasy 14 player, I was particularly happy about an intermediate boss. Angra Mainyu is waiting for you in the second third of the game. This is a flying eye that plays a kind of death roulette around itself. Anyone standing in the wrong area will take damage.

This eye took me back to the time of Final Fantasy 14, when I could often be found in the Crystal Tower at level 50. The Crystal Tower houses three different contents in which several bosses have to be defeated.

One of these bosses is also a flying eye that starts a roulette around itself. Anyone who stops in the flashing area has taken a lot of damage. The intermediate boss from Final Fantasy 16 reminded me exactly of this opponent and therefore gave me a nice nostalgic flashback.

But the big highlight is a boss that Final Fantasy 14 players should also know. At the end of the game Omega is waiting for us. The boss opponent delivered a more exciting fight than I have had in a long time.

The opponent is divided into two main phases. There are challenging mechanics where you have to dodge attacks. The whole thing is accompanied by an epic soundtrack, for which I turned my television extra loud.

The fight was exciting until the last moment. In my fight I actually used all of the healing potions and was barely able to defeat the boss. The fireworks and the groovy soundtrack definitely left a lasting impression on me.

How do I start the DLC? “Echoes of the Fallen” features a new side story. You can only start the additional quest if you meet certain requirements. The game already tells you that you have to complete two different missions beforehand. However, for these two quests there are other quests that you must have completed beforehand.

    These include the following quests:

  • City of Madness (main quest)
  • The Phoenix’s Sorrow (side quest)
  • Where there is a will (side quest)
  • Concern for Jill (side quest)
  • Flowers for a Smile (side quest)
  • If you are not a diligent side quest lover, you will first have to spend a few minutes catching up on the side quests. Since I didn’t have this knowledge at the start of the DLC, searching around took me a full 2 hours. And that for a DLC that itself is only 3 hours long.

    Per

  • Action-packed battles with interesting mechanics
  • Great final battle with a great soundtrack and colorful thunderstorm effects
  • Jill and Joshua are also there
  • Cons

  • Not all side quests to start the DLC are listed
  • The story only plays a minor role
  • Who is the expansion worthwhile for? If you enjoyed the action-packed combat in Final Fantasy 16, you’ll definitely have fun with the expansion. There are new enemies that appear in different designs. The intermediate bosses in particular are a lot of fun because they introduce new mechanics that weren’t available in the main game.

Anyone hoping for another exciting story about Final Fantasy 16 will be disappointed with this DLC. There is a story, but it won’t matter if you miss it as it only expands FF16 minimally. There are twists here and there in the story, but they are not as dramatically staged as in the main game.
