One October morning in 2004, an 8-year-old boy and a 56-year-old woman were stabbed to death in central Linköping. After 16 years, the police were finally able to arrest the perpetrator after working with DNA tracing in genealogy records. It is the first case in Sweden that was solved in that way. Despite the success, the use of dna genealogy was banned in Sweden. But now the government has proposed an amendment to the law that could come into force as early as this summer – which would allow the police to use the method again. How easily do you actually leave DNA traces?
What can the new law mean for investigations? And what other major cases could possibly be solved in the future?
Guest: Peter Sjölund, DNA genealogist who was the one who solved the double murder in Linköping.
Program manager and producer: Olivia Bengtsson.
