The state of California is partially submerged by the series of storms and unusual weather systems that move in over the West Coast of the United States. At least 14 people have died, many residents are without power and fashionable coastal towns are being evacuated.

The warnings were repeated on Tuesday: Snow in the Sierra Nevada, storm surge in areas of the San Francisco Bay and tornadoes in inland California.

The death toll from the storms of the past few days rose on Tuesday from twelve to 14, after two people died after being hit by falling trees.

Closed roads

Important main roads in the state had to be closed due to floods, mudslides, heavy snowfall or due to traffic accidents.

Monterey Bay, located on the coastline between San Francisco and Los Angeles, was threatened by high waves and flooding.

Further south along the Pacific coast, a large part of the population of Montecito was forced to leave their homes. The evacuation received media attention as many famous people live in the city, among them TV personality Oprah Winfrey, singer Katy Perry and British Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle.

Additionally, the Chatsworth neighborhood of Los Angeles was hit by an extensive water-filled sinkhole that buried vehicles.
