The classic brewery goes bankrupt after 138 years

In 2016, Nyckelbryggerie came out with the News morning profile Steffo Törnquist entered as a partner in the company, along with several others.

– For several years, I have considered their Christmas must to be by far the best in Sweden, I first found it at Operakällaren, where I annually indulge in a Christmas feast. Their berry drinks are also fantastic, so I have memorized the name Nyckelbryggerier, he said then in an interview with Beer tower and continued:

– And when I ran a while ago Pelle Linkanone of my best friends from school in Linköping, who turned out to be a major owner in the brewery, so I wanted to play with him again.

After that, the Norrland brewery was hyped and mentioned as “One of five Swedish beverage producers you should know” in The entertainment guide 2017.

Key breweries in bankruptcy

But now it’s over with Christmas must, beer and Norrland soft drinks. Key breweries, which started in 1896 in Luleå, filed for bankruptcy on Friday, writes Norrbottenskuriren.

The company has shown red numbers for several years, and went back SEK 5.2 million in 2022.

– These are cost increases. Above all, shipping costs have gone up an awful lot and raw material costs have also gone up, says Per Lindquist Omberg, chairman of the board of Nyckelbryggerier to the newspaper and continues:

– There are large kites that can keep lower prices. It can be said that the pandemic did not favor the small breweries and inflation has caused it. We have had quite exclusive goods, our Christmas must costs around SEK 50 in stores and we sold a good amount of it this Christmas, but it is noticeable that people are forced to choose.

Sweden’s best Christmas must

The brewery did well until the late 1980s, when a somewhat shaky story began. The company was shut down and restarted twice in the early 2000s.

In 2007, the brewery started its production in Älvsbyn, and Nyckelbryggeriet became known above all for its Christmas must, which was named Sweden’s best on several occasions.

Six employees are affected by the bankruptcy.
