David Wilcox, Spoons to perform at Brantford’s Canada Day celebration

Canadian rock and blues musician David Wilcox will return to the main stage at this year’s Canada Day celebration in Brantford.

Up to 20,000 visitors are expected to pack Lions Park Steve Brown Complex, which will be filled with activities on Monday, July 1 to celebrate Canada’s 157th birthday.

“This year’s festivities promise to be a vibrant display of our community spirit, with activities and entertainment that cater to all ages and interests,” said Mayor Kevin Davis.

Dave Carrol, Brantford Canada Day committee chair, said the team has worked to ensure there’s something for everyone, including markeplace vendors, midway rides and a variety of eats from local food trucks.

Singer-songwriter-musician David Wilcox, known for his distinctive guitar skills, thoughtful and often humorous lyrics and smooth baritone voice, offers audiences a fusion of rock, blues and folk. He’s played everything from backyard barbecues to Carnegie Hall, getting people on their feet with songs such as Do the Bearcat, Layin’ Pipe, Riverboat Fantasy and That Hypnotizin’ Boogie.

The Spoons, formed in 1980 and led by Gordon Deppe and Sandy Horne, became synonymous with ’80s pop and new wave, turning out hits such as Nova Heart and Romantic Traffic. Their album Arias & Symphonies was hailed as one of the 20 most influential albums of the 1980s.

The Canada Day music starts at noon, featuring local and regional artists, including Nosey Neighbor, Jack Sith, Tyler Wilson Band, and Jace Martin and the Pace and Queens Court.

The Spoons take the main stage at 6:30 pm, followed by Wilcox at 8.

Independent Pro Wrestling shows happen at 1 pm, 3 pm and 5 pm

Families can explore the Young Canadians area, which opens at noon, and features interactive displays, activities and entertainment, including the Fun at the Fair Dance Party with from Trolls; story time with Brantford’s Deputy Fire Chief Scott Pipe and PAW Patrol’s Marshall; character meet and greets; performances by Rumple and friends; and the Debra Brown and Circus Friends show. Pony rides will be available for $10.

The KidZone Carnival and midway runs from 11 am to 11 pm Ride tickets and ride-all-day wristbands can be purchased onsite or online in advance at a discounted price. Visit Brantford.ca/CanadaDay.

A complimentary shuttle service is available to help attendees get to and from Lions Park Steve Brown Sports Complex. On-site parking is available. The single-entry parking cost is $10 per vehicle in support of the Rotary Club of Brantford Sunrise Club. Brantford Lift will also offer free transportation, with registration required. Accessible seating is available at the front of the main stage. Transportation details, including a list of pickup and drop-off locations, can be viewed at Brantford.ca/CanadaDay.

The Canada Day Green Team and City of Brantford are committed to entertaining 75 per cent of the waste generated at this year’s event. Attendees are asked to bring a reusable water bottle with them and use the Quench Buggy for free water refills.

The city is looking for volunteers to assist with the Canada Day event. Duties include set up and take down, help with parking, and cleanup. Volunteers will get a keepsake T-shirt. Applications can be found at Brantford.ca/CanadaDayVolunteer and will be accepted until Wednesday, June 21.
