The president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has been charged with sexual harassment following accusations by several of the country’s top female wrestlers, New Delhi police announced on Thursday (June 15th). The charges against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh were publicly leveled in January by Vinesh Phogat, one of the most decorated female wrestlers in the country’s history, and Sakshi Malik, an Olympic bronze medalist in 2016. According to the athletes, the president of the WFI engaged in fondling and demanded sex from them. President of the WFI for around ten years, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is also a powerful member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
