The Sopranos prequel charts the rise of a gangster legend on Amazon Prime

The backstory is set in 1960’s New Jersey and revolves around a young Tony Soprano, played by Michael Gandolfini, son of the late Sopranos star. Young Tony gets caught up in the conflicts between rival gangster gangs made up of Afro-Americans and Italians. At the same time he emulates his powerful uncle Dickie Moltisanti (Alessandro Nivola) and also wants to become a mob boss.

The Sopranos prequel was co-written by Sopranos creator David Chase and features in the cast some pleasing genre faces like Ray Liotta and Jon Bernthal.

The Many Saints of Newark is unsurprisingly peppered with references and Easter eggs to The Sopranos. In addition, the prequel also works as an independent gangster film, which has many trademarks of the genre such as Crime suspense, simmering conflicts and brutal escalations united.
