The 2024 Oscar nominations are here

Last year, the science fiction spectacle Everything Everywhere All at Once emerged as the winning film at the Academy Awards. This year, the biopic Oppenheimer, the sci-fi film Poor Things and the toy hit Barbie are among the favorites for the 2024 Oscar. The nominees have just been announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Sandra Hülser next to Emma Stone in the Oscar race

German actress Sandra Hülser was nominated for Best Actress for her performance in the legal thriller Anatomy of a Case, joining Emma Stone (Poor Things) and Carey Mulligan (Maestro).

Sandra Hülser is only the third German actress after Luise Rainer and Marlene Dietrich to receive an Oscar nomination (via Hollywood Reporter). In the same category, Lily Gladstone from Killers of the Flower Moon was the first indigenous US actress to be nominated.

13 Oscar nominations for Oppenheimer

Anatomy of a Case is also included in the Best Film category. The dominant films of the cinema year appear there: Oppenheimer (13 nominations in total) and Barbie (8 nominations). Martin Scorsese’s crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon landed 10 nominations, while Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things has 11 Oscar chances (more on Poor Things in this article).

This can also happen from Germany The staff room team Raise Hopes, which was nominated in the Best International Film category. The same applies to Wim Wenders’ drama Perfect Days, which was submitted for Japan.

The 96th Academy Awards will be on the night of March 10th to 11th held in Los Angeles. Late Night host Jimmy Kimmel will host the evening for the fourth time.

Who decides who awards the Oscars?

The Academy Awards are hosted every year by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The AMPAS includes almost 10,000 members from various professional sectors of the film industry. Unlike a film festival, for example, there is no jury at the Oscars, but rather several thousand people who vote on the nominations and winners of the Academy Awards in a complex election process.
