A mother, her six children and two nieces have died in a fire in northwestern Turkey.

The fire broke out just before midnight on Tuesday in the city of Bursa. The woman’s husband tried in vain to save the family, who were all refugees from Syria who had lived in Turkey since 2017.

The children were aged 1 to 12 years. All those who died were inside their apartment when the fire started.

– There are nine bodies in there. Eight of them are children, regional governor Yakup Canbolat said, according to the Anadolu news agency.

Around 3.7 million Syrian refugees are in Turkey as a result of the war in Syria, which broke out in 2011.
