Sydenham clean up returns May 27

In what has become an annual tradition, volunteers will launch their vessels into the Sydenham River May 27 to remove garbage from the water.

The Sydenham Spring Paddle and Clean is being held for the fourth year in a row. Sally Joyce, a Chatham resident, started the event in 2020 after she started taking her kayak on the river to clean up litter on her own.

Approximately 1,100 pounds of garbage was weighed at last spring’s event, Joyce said, up from approximately 600 pounds the first year.

The event will begin at 10 am behind the blue building 6850 Base Line Rd. in Wallaceburg and run until 4 pm

Participants are asked to bring non-motorized watercraft, if possible, but small runabouts are welcome to help pull the larger items.

Launching into the water and parking on-site is free. Those attending are encouraged to dress appropriately for weather and mud.

“We have had a great deal of muddy fun, … satisfying results and have met new friends at our previous events – so come on out and try it if you want to spend some good time in nature, deepen your connection with the river, and help out with other nature-loving people,” organizers said in a social media post.

People without a vessel are also invited to the event as other participants may be able to lend them one. As well, help will be needed to sort and on shore to gather and weigh the garbage.

Magnet fishermen can also attend.

Food and drinks will be available at the event. For more information, email [email protected].
