Swedish citizen killed in attack in Erbil, Iraq

Iran attacked targets in northern Iraq on Tuesday.
A Swedish citizen in his 60s died in the attack in the city of Erbil, according to information given to TV4 Nyheterna.
Another man from Sweden is also injured, the Foreign Ministry confirms.

The robot attack was carried out in Iraq on Monday evening.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has, according to its own state-controlled media, taken responsibility for the deed. It was stated that it was aimed at the headquarters of the Israeli Mossad, something it calls a “spy center” and “anti-Iranian terrorist groups”, in the city of Erbil, located in the northern and Kurdish parts of the country.

However, local authorities have denied Iran’s claim, saying it is instead a family home.

According to the local Kurdish government, at least four civilians were killed and six people were injured.

Man from Sweden dead – another injured

Now the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UD, states that one of the injured is from Sweden.

“The Foreign Ministry is aware that a Swedish man in his twenties was injured in Iraq during an attack in Erbil on 15 January. Personnel from the Swedish embassy in Baghdad have been in contact with the person in question,” writes the Foreign Ministry’s press service in an email. The condition of the injury is not known.

According to information to TV4 Nyheterna, a Swedish citizen, a man in his 60s who had emigrated from Sweden some time ago, also died in the robot attack. Something the local media also reported on.

Swedish authorities have been contacted by the information.

“The Foreign Ministry and the embassy are also investigating the information that a Swedish man is said to have died in the attack,” they write further.

At the same time as the attack in Erbil, Iran is said to have also attacked “terrorists” in Syria. The killing is said to be a response to two suicide attacks in Iran earlier in January. Over 90 people died and IS claimed responsibility.
