According to Sofia Linder, chief economist at Mobility Sweden, the development is “worrying”.

– It is worrying both from a safety aspect and in terms of the environment, says Sofia Linde to Vi Bilägare.

Reasons given for the average age of cars increasing include the tough economic situation, when pressured households choose to keep their old cars longer.

Fewer new registrations and more cars being exported due to the weak krona are also cited as reasons.

However, the age of the cars that are exported has also increased in recent years.

Not the worst in Europe

An aging car fleet is not a problem that is limited to Sweden, but similar phenomena are seen in other European countries.
