The Swedish team in the women’s 4×200 meter freestyle was far from any medal favorites at the EC final in Rome.

Sofia Åstedt, Hanna Bergman, Elvira Mörtstrand and Alicia Lundblad also finished in eighth and last place in the final. The Swedish team swam in at 8.09.48, which is a reduction of around five seconds from the attempts earlier on Thursday.

The battle for the gold became a battle between Great Britain and the Netherlands, where in the end the Netherlands won in 7.54.07, 66 hundredths ahead of Great Britain. Hungary won the bronze.

The Swedish men’s team, with the quartet of Robin Hanson, Victor Johansson, Marcus Holmquist and Elias Persson, went to the final in seventh and best time and, like the Swedish ladies, were not medal favourites.

The men also finished in eighth and last place. 7.18.73 was slower than in the trials and around five seconds behind Germany in seventh place.

Hungary won in 7.05.38. Italy took the silver and France was third.
