It was a morning in mid-June that two men were injured, one seriously, after being attacked with a knife in central Västerås.

The 16-year-old suspect has admitted during police questioning and on remand that he tried to kill the two men, as he thought they were police officers. He was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crime.

Can’t go to jail

Before the trial, the 16-year-old underwent a major forensic psychiatric examination. It showed that he suffers from a serious mental disorder, even at the time of the crime. This means that he cannot be sentenced to prison.

Ahead of the trial, District Attorney Fredrik Ingblad tells SVT that since the previously unpunished 16-year-old committed such a serious crime, a different punishment than closed youth care may be appropriate – forensic psychiatric care.

In the clip, SVT’s reporter summarizes the events.
