The President of the Sudanese transition, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and his Chadian counterpart, Mahamat Idriss Déby, expressed on January 29, 2023 in Ndjamena their desire to strengthen the Chad-Sudan mixed force. A force created in 2005 to patrol the 1,000 kilometers of common borders of the two countries.

On January 29, 2023, a meeting took place between Sudan and Chad. The President of the Sudanese transition, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, was indeed in Ndjamena, where he discussed with his counterpart Mahamat Idriss Déby. It was about diplomacy, economy, and especially security.

The two Heads of State have indicated that they want to strengthen the Chad-Sudan mixed force. A force created in 2005 to patrol the 1,000 kilometers of common borders and which has fallen into lethargy in recent years.

They say they want to strengthen exchanges, particularly in terms of information and intelligence between the security services of the two countries, as well as judicial cooperation.

Border incidents are regular

This desire to increase exchanges comes at a time when incidents at their common borders are regular.

As a reminder, six months ago, a cattle theft had degenerated into inter-community clashes, and had resulted in around thirty deaths.

And then there is this other concern for Ndjamena, underlines a researcher: recent information reports the presence of armed groups and especially of a new rebellion in the south of Chad, this time on the border with the Central African Republic. Eventually Ndjamena would also like to reactivate its security cooperation with Bangui.

Finally, the Heads of State decided to hold a forum on security and development before the end of the year in Abéché.
