Student discovers he owns a 5-year-old Fortnite skin that is now worth a lot of money

At Christmas time, many people find the inspiration to rummage through their possessions and see what else is flying around: a Mexican student struck gold. Because he has a rare code for Fortnite that he bought by chance years ago and it is now really valuable. The skin is currently offered on Ebay for 1,942 euros.

That was the question: A Mexican student posted a question to Fortnite fans on their Reddit on Boxing Day, December 26th:

  • He came home from university for Christmas, looked through his things, found something and now he has a question.
  • He bought a controller years ago: The controller came with a code for a skin in Fortnite. Whether the code is valuable – he never played Fortnite himself.
  • And he actually struck gold here. Experts estimate the skin is worth between $500 and $1,000. If you look on Ebay, this could even be a conservative estimate: This bundle is currently being traded there for €1,942.

Code was included in a promotion for the Xbox One S in 2018

Why is the skin so valuable?? The code is for “The Eon Skin Bundle”, it included the “Eon Outfit” and 500 V Bucks.

This bundle was available in September 2018 as a limited promotional campaign when purchasing an Xbox One S or a controller. We reported about the thing on MeinMMO back then.

The Xbox bundle, where you got the console, cost €180 at the time, but you got the XBox One S, Fortnite as a game, 2000 V Bucks and the Fortnite The Eon Pack Bundle with skin, pickaxe and glider.

Since this promotion was limited and exclusive to the Xbox One at the time, not that many of these skins exist anyway. Additionally, people who received a code at the time probably simply redeemed it and therefore it was off the market.

Because Fortnite will still be played in 2023, perhaps even more than before, and there are some people who want to own every skin in Fortnite or at least rare ones, the value of the skin alone is now almost 10 times as high as in 2018 – and Back then there was still an Xbox:

  • In 2018 you bought an Xbox and got the skin for free, so to speak
  • In 2023, the skin alone will be worth as much as 10 units of XBox One S back then
  • At that time, the skins were available for free with an Xbox One S for €180.

Such limited promo codes, which can be logged into any account, tend to increase in value extremely over time:

In general, it can be a good investment to secure such “promo codes” when they come out and then lock them away for a few years. Of course, that’s always a risk, because a game like this has to still be relevant even after years.
