US State Department Spokesperson Ned Price made a written statement regarding the prison sentence of Russian dissident Navalny.

Reacting to Navalny’s prison sentence, Price argued in his statement that the decision in question was taken with political motivations and was unfair.

Russian dissident Navalny, imprisoned in Russia, was sentenced to 9 years in prison for corruption and insulting members of the court.

Navalny, who did not admit his guilt at the trial, will be able to appeal the decision by applying to the court of appeal.

ARREST OF NAVALNIY

Alexei Navalny, an opponent of the Kremlin, was arrested at the airport on his return to Moscow on January 17, 2021, after receiving treatment in Berlin for alleged poisoning.

At the request of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service, on February 2, 2021, the case against Navalny in the Moscow City Court was concluded, and the court converted Navalny’s 3.5-year suspended sentence, which was given in the past as a result of the corruption case, to normal imprisonment on the grounds that he did not fulfill the conditions of judicial control.

The court had ordered Navalny to serve his remaining sentence in prison, taking into account the 10 months he had previously spent under house arrest.

The Investigative Committee of Russia announced on 11 August 2021 that a new investigation was launched against Navalny on the grounds that the Anti-Corruption Foundation he founded violated human rights.

The Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK), founded by Navalny, was liquidated on August 31, 2021, by a court decision. (AA)
