A rant by a YouTube streamer against Bethesda went viral on Twitter. He’s upset that Starfield lets you choose your character’s preferred pronouns during character creation. That ruins the whole immersion, he says, with this ideology Bethesda spoils the fun for him. The fire speech about 2:37 minutes goes viral.
Who is this?
Brite escalates over pronouns in Starfield
What is the man upset about? One detail makes the streamer explode: In Starfield you can determine the “pronouns” of your character.
In earlier games, the choice of appearance and body shape determined the gender of the character. With Starfield you can also play a male body type, but give this character female pronouns.
The targeted naming of the preferred pronouns and thus the way one would like to be addressed is considered a “political woke” in some circles – DrDisrespect has also been upset about it.
Streamer complains that Bethesda is ruining his escapism with their agenda
That’s what the streamer says: He says he loves nothing more than sitting in a comfortable chair in front of his PC and starting a new role-playing game. He’s totally falling into this alien world, dreaming of visiting planets, totally caught up in the game.
But Bethesda ruined his experience by bringing modern-day themes into this fantasy world.
In a furious speech he roars into the camera for almost 2 minutes and expresses his anger that Bethesda with their “ideology” spoils the whole immersion and ultimately also the game.
Fuck pronouns, fuck gender ambiguity, fuck California crap.
Bethesda does not allow escapism, but has to “shovel” their agenda into everyone.
Here’s the clip, which has since gone viral:
Clip receives a lot of criticism, but also approval
How is this discussed? The streamer’s clip went viral via various sources on Twitter and is one of the biggest talking points on Twitter right now.
Critics like HasanAbi can only shake their heads at this. The Twitch streamer suggests surgically sedating the man through brain surgery. The “Bro” should rather get upset that the menus and maps are not optimized (via twitter).
Others complain that such performances get so much attention and that quieter, deeper arguments go unheeded (via twitter).
The German influencer, Maurice Weber, speaks of “eternal yesterdays” who find games like Starfield to woke, while the success of the games proves them right (via twitter).
However, there are also some who agree with the British and also find it disturbing to be confronted with things like “pronouns” in an SF universe.
The topic of “pronouns” is becoming a political issue in English-speaking countries:
