Just a few days ago, Spaceman: A Short History of Bohemian Space Travel celebrated its premiere at the Berlinale. You can already stream the sci-fi film on Netflix. The story goes to that book template of the same name by Jaroslav Kalfař back. Adam Sandler stars in the adaptation.

Sandler, who is best known for his comedies, shows his serious side in Spaceman. If you liked the actor in films like Punch-Drunk Love, The Black Diamond and Hustle, then you should definitely take a look at Spaceman. Sandler has rarely been seen in such a vulnerable role.

New science fiction film on Netflix: Adam Sandler meets a giant space spider in Spaceman

The story of Spaceman revolves around astronaut Jakub (Sandler), who has been on a mission in space for 189 days. One mysterious cloud worries people on earth. Jakub is supposed to find out what this is all about, and to do this he leaves his pregnant wife Lenka (Carey Mulligan) behind on earth.

It quickly becomes clear: Jakub is completely lost in the endless expanses of space. The loneliness gnaws at him. An emotional wreck, he moves through the darkness. Just then he meets an alien who looks like a… huge spider looks like: Hanuš (Paul Dano) gives the sad astronaut a big fright.

But Hanuš is up to no harm. On the contrary: he cares about Jakub and helps him emotional support. But is the alien creature real? Or just a product of Jakub’s imagination? He may have finally lost his mind. At the same time, Hanuš speaks many truths that he does not want to face.

On the trail of Ad Astra: Spaceman is a touching sci-fi film with a terrific Adam Sandler

Spaceman is not an action-packed sci-fi blockbuster à la Rebel Moon. Rather, we are dealing with one here thoughtful, sensitive journey full of uncertainty, in the tradition of Interstellar and Ad Astra. The great classics of the genre are also cited, from Solaris to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The relationship that develops between Jakub and Hanuš is particularly touching. When I saw Spaceman at the Berlinale, I was very impressed by how the two dissimilar characters interacted narrow, winding corridors of the spaceship – almost as if they were slowly dancing in weightlessness.

Spaceman is now available to stream on Netflix.
