Södertälje: Fear after double shootings

Two days in a row, shots have been fired in Södertälje.
Ann Hörnquist has lived in the city for over 20 years, but now wants to move, partly because of the shootings.
– During the period that I lived here, it has been on and off. So I’m actually on my way out of here, but I haven’t found a new place yet, says Ann.

Late on Friday night, the police were alerted that shots had been fired at two residences in Södertälje. The bullets went through windows and doors, but no one was injured.

On Saturday evening, the next alarm came, even then shots had been fired at a residence in Södertälje. The incidents are being investigated as, among other things, attempted murder and aggravated weapons offences.

– We are investigating possible connections between both these shootings and other acts of violence in Södertälje, but also in the rest of the region, says Anna Westberg, press spokesperson

The police: The level of conflict is high

Recently, several serious crimes have affected Södertälje. At the beginning of June, a man was shot to death in the Blombacka district. According to information to TV4 Nyheterna, the murder was linked to the gang environment within Södertälje.

– The level of conflict in Södertälje has been at a high level for a long time, it has gone up and down, and it still is, says Anna Westberg.

After the murder, a security zone, also called a visitation zone, was introduced in parts of the Blombacka and Geneta areas.

– We have had a security zone in part of Södertälje for a two-week period. It ended on Friday. However, the two shootings this weekend were in other places in Södertälje, says Anna Westerberg.

After the weekend’s crime: “I’m scared”

Residents in Södertälje tell how they were woken up by the helicopters and that there is fear after the weekend’s deed. Ann Hörnquist has lived in Södertälje since 2001, but says she now wants to move from the city.

– With every shooting you get scared, I’m scared, says Ann Hörnquist.

Oliwer Axelsson, who also lives in Södertälje, says that he is not worried and feels safe, but at the same time feels sorry for those affected by the violence.

– I have heard the helicopters that disturbed me during the night. But I don’t know those who get shot, but they feel sorry for those who do, says Oliwer.
