Icy, storm and risk of flooding.

That is what SMHI warns about at the beginning of the week.

– In the south it will be about rain, says Lars Knutsson, meteorologist on duty at SMHI.

The weekend weather ends with snow and debris. And unstable weather awaits this week. During the night to Monday, a deep low pressure moves in over large parts of Sweden. Wind and rain in the south. Snow in the north.

SMHI has issued yellow warnings for icy conditions as the rain falls on cold roads. The warnings apply to Götaland, Svealand, northern Halland and Norrland.

– In the south it will be about rain. We have a fairly large area with warnings for icy conditions when rain falls on sub-cooled roads, says Lars Knutsson, meteorologist on duty at SMHI.

– Then it will be generally windy with gale warnings.

Could be a storm

On Monday in western Götaland and northern Halland, the rain, snowmelt and strong wind can create local flooding in basements, on roads and viaducts. On the west coast, the winds can become so strong that they blow up to a storm. SMHI warns of falling trees and “risk of flying objects”.

– It looks like there could be between 30-50 millimeters in total in the area, which is normally not enough for a rain warning. But the rain will fall on snow and the ground is already frozen with ice as a substrate, so it will be difficult for the water to drain away, says Lars Knutsson.

Later in the evening, the low pressure moves up over Norrland. Snow and strong winds are expected from Sundsvall in the south to Kiruna in the north.

In an area from Örnsköldsvik in the south to Umeå in the north, SMHI has issued an orange warning between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. In addition to traffic problems, it is likely that the electricity will be cut out in the area, which could also affect telephony.

New low pressure on Wednesday

During Tuesday, most warnings have disappeared. But according to SMHI, the unsettled weather continues this week with swings between plus degrees, light winds on the west coast and snow in Norrland.

– We will get a new low pressure on Wednesday. It looks like Götaland and Svealand will be affected by snow and rain, which will generate new snowfall warnings.

With the low pressure, the temperatures go towards zero again in southern parts of the country. And the roads continue to be slippery during the week.

– It will be a slouch. The temperatures will rise with rain falling on the snow, says Knutsson.
