“Smells like overcorrection and is ridiculous”

In Destiny 2’s upcoming Season of Wish, Guardians can expect drastic changes. The popular Titan class in particular is hit by a nasty 5x nerf, which the community is already criticizing as an overcorrection and ridiculous. MeinMMO tells you what’s waiting in Bungie’s “Go Slow” update.

Hard Nerfs to Popular Abilities: As Bungie announced in the weekly TWiD (“This Week in Destiny”) on November 22nd, players can expect significant melee and survival nerfs as well as adjustments to many exotic armor pieces in the upcoming Season 23.

  • Your survival skills, such as Banner of War and Restoration, will be weakened because you simply cannot be killed.
  • Titans receive nasty restrictions that slow down their most popular killing tactic with shotguns.
  • Bungie has also announced the first steps for adjustments to the “Fountain of Splendor”, “Guard of Twilight” (Bubble) and the neglected Stasis abilities.
  • MeinMMO has looked at all the changes and explained why your powerful abilities will come with significant costs in the future and how much it will affect your ability to survive.

This is how hard the 5x nerf will be

This is why Titans are shocked right now: Changes for all classes were presented in the information about the upcoming patch. But Guardians with a Titan in particular quickly realized that they would be hit particularly hard with a 5x nerf.

For the Solar Titan, the cooldown of the small “Bonk” hammer, the healing-based solar verb “Restoration”, sunspots, the armor exotic “Synthoceps” and popular mods are being nerfed. The latter affects all three classes.

  • When you pick up the small solar throwing hammer, you no longer get your melee energy back immediately, but only after 1.4 seconds. This will probably still be S-tier, but not quite as overpowered.
  • For sunspots, the maximum duration is reduced from 20 to 12 seconds.
  • The Exotic “Synthoceps” no longer has extended melee lunge distance and the PvE bonus for surrounded melee damage is reduced from 200% to +165%. Instead of 50%, there is now 100% more melee bonus on glaives.
  • The mods “Heavyhanded”, “Firepower” and “Reaper” will be adjusted from Season 23 onwards. You will then have a 10 second cooldown to generate an Orb of Power so the amount of Orbs generated will also be reduced.
  • But Bungie also reduced the amount of energy refunds for the Kickstart benefits as well as “Swing Transfer”, “Detonation Boost”, “Impact Induction”, “Focus Attack”, “Range, “Distribution” and “Bomber”.
  • Why is this being adjusted? Bungie believes these changes will help bring back meaningful choice in both ability usage and the armor loading system, while also opening up the opportunity for each armor mod to have a valuable effect.

Swinging the little hammer will soon take longer

    No more sliding, shooting, killing

The new motto is “Go Slow!”: The age of quick melee attacks in PvP is also coming to an end, which was long the preferred way for the Titans in particular to eliminate their opponents. First slide, then fire the weapon and also perform a shoulder attack or a sliding melee.

  • In the future, this method of killing will come with significant risks and cooldowns.
  • Starting with Season of Wish, firing your weapon while sliding prevents Sprint or Slide-activated melee attacks from activating.
  • Why is this attack being adjusted? According to Bungie, the reason for the adjustment is that, among other things, such quick kills are extremely difficult for other Guardians to detect and understand.

However, the arc aspect “Storm Strike” will receive a slight improvement in the upcoming update. This includes an increase in base damage, more accurate tracking at longer ranges, and improved accuracy.

“They really want us to suffer!”

It’s all about balance: The Guardians have become increasingly stronger over the last few seasons, meaning that hardly anything feels challenging anymore.

It became increasingly difficult for Bungie to put combat pressure on players with optimal builds. However, Destiny 2 should feel fair to all audiences, including those who may not use builds. At the same time, however, there should be well-coordinated difficulty levels for top-equipped players.

In short: the survivability of the Guardians at the top end is too high and that’s why your survival skills will be put to the test in Season 23. This includes the “Braided Armor”, “Restoration”, “Devouring” but also the “Banner of War”.

  • Braided Armor: Damage resistance with Strand against PvE fighters is reduced from 55% to 45%.
  • Restoration: Only grants a reduced healing rate for solar abilities.
  • Level x1 = 35 HP/s in PvE and 17.5 HP/s in PvP
  • Level x2 = 50 HP/s in PvE and 25 HP/s in PvP
  • Devour: Void healing amount, both activated and refreshed, is reduced from full healing. Unless Feed the Void is equipped.
  • Just a minor change: While some Guardians here have seen their lives dwindle massively, we don’t expect these changes to have a significant impact. The refund would have had to be halved to achieve a noticeable effect in the game. Bungie also explicitly mentioned that this is only “a small change.”

In addition, the currently most popular strand aspect “Banner of War” will also be adjusted.

  • The number of enemy kills required to level up the banner is increased by approximately double.
  • In order to compensate for this disadvantage, the time period at each level of the banner is increased accordingly. This varies depending on the type of target defeated.
  • You will certainly feel these changes in the game. It will make it more difficult for you to achieve maximum healing with the Titan’s War Banner aspect in the future.

Bubble and fountain nerfs are being planned

The question that remains is what Bungie plans to do with Destiny 2’s two best options for healing and protection, the Warlock’s healing Fountain of Glory and the protective Titan Bubble Ward of Dawn.

  • In Season of Wish, Bungie will increase the base cooldowns of these two Supers from 417 seconds to 455 seconds to give them more competition in turn-based modes.
  • The cooldown nerf is still aimed at PVP and does nothing in PVE. But Bungie also wants to fundamentally reevaluate the place of these two options in PvE in the future.

Nerfs for the “Fountain of Splendor” and “Protection of Twilight” are also expected.

Why does Bungie want to adjust these options? In the developer’s opinion, the “Fountain of Splendor” in particular offers too much. His effective invulnerability is not something the sandbox can or should continue to support.

Content creator Saltagreppo also believes that Bungie needs to be even tougher with these two ultimates because otherwise nothing will change. You don’t need an average damage reduction of 10% like you would with Braided Armor.

So bask in the protection for a while until further changes come in Season 23, which will then also adjust the dominance in PvE.

And what about stasis? With the coolest of all abilities, expectations fell somewhat short. Bungie mentioned changes, but the big “Wow!” wasn’t there yet.

  • There will be some tuning changes to your Stasis abilities, mostly focused on stat bonuses and penalties.
  • Stasis, like the other abilities, is finally getting a verb that Bungie is tentatively calling “Frost Armor.” It aims to give you better survivability.
  • Stasis grenades will be improved, such as the cooldown of the glacier grenade from 152 seconds to 121 seconds or the cold surge grenade being able to track targets better.
  • Weapons with special ammo also receive a stronger damage bonus from 5% to 10% against frozen targets, aiming to make smashing enemies more consistent.

This is what the community says about the adjustments

The community immediately reacted to these announcements and many players expressed their dissatisfaction with the supposed over-correction. Some are even calling the changes ridiculous, arguing that the popularity of the Titan class doesn’t mean it’s too strong, but that it’s enjoyed by many players.

  • The player Savenura55 comments via Reddit that Titans are made far too weak: “Titans have already been significantly weakened in 3/4 of the last adjustments, so that they are no longer playable outside of “Banner of War”. I don’t understand why Bungie thinks this is the right path given the poor state of the game. Maybe they didn’t fire the people who were the problem like they claimed.”
  • wandering_caribou, on the other hand, sees a solar season coming with a view to the new artifact: “The first impression for the Titan in PvE is that with the solar hammer nerfs I will play the “Banner of War” more rather than less. [Der Nerf] won’t really affect it much and the stasis changes won’t matter much.
  • Content creator and four-time Worlds First winner Saltagreppo said: “This was one of the best editions of This Week in Destiny in a long time. [Bungie] actually addressed a lot of balance issues, and most of the changes were well thought out and justified. Of course not everything is perfect, but overall very positive steps.”
  • The Destiny editorial team at MeinMMO also believes that the changes are solid and fair. On paper, this may feel bad to some players. But without trying them, it’s hard to say whether these changes are really over the top or not. These new cooldowns with dynamic regeneration might still be intuitive enough.

When can you test the changes? You can play the new season 23 from November 28th. And from then on, most of these changes will go live in the game so that you can try them out and evaluate them.

While Bungie emphasizes that this is the first step in a long-term process to improve balance in the game, community reaction will determine whether these changes have the desired effect or if further adjustments are needed.

What do you think about the drastic changes to Titans in Destiny 2 “Season of Wish”? Does that affect the way you play? And do you think Bungie’s ability nerfing decisions will have the desired effects? Feel free to tell us in the comments.
