Small increase in covid patients in Stockholm

For the first time since mid-March, the downward trend in the number of covid patients in the Stockholm Region has been broken. However, the situation is far much better than last winter when more than 600 patients were cared for in hospital with covid-19 in the region.

– It is not surprising that it varies a bit between the days and regarding the spread of infection, we see no signs that it is increasing, says Johan Bratt.

The number of covid patients who are so ill that they need care in the intensive care unit remain at the same low level. On Tuesday, only two patients with covid-19 were treated at IVA, as many as a week ago. 90 of the covid patients are cared for in the emergency hospitals and 33 receive geriatric care outside the hospitals.

Of the hospital patients with diagnosed covid-19, about half are cared for for the symptoms of the virus and half for something else. However, even these require an infectious treatment, which means extra resource needs.

– It still means a real burden on the hospitals and staff, says the chief physician who had hoped that the number of covid patients would decrease faster until the summer.

He is also positive to the fact that the region has not seen the increased spread of infection that the Public Health Agency warned about in its scenarios that were developed for the spring.

To keep track of the occurrence of covid-19 when the general testing has been abolished, the regions look at the virus levels in the wastewater, among other things, and these are at a relatively stable and low level, according to Johan Bratt.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, just over 570,000 cases of covid-19 have been confirmed in the Stockholm Region. A total of 5,262 people have died with confirmed infection in the capital region, 686 of the deaths have been reported since the turn of the year.

The focus regarding the vaccination against covid-19 is currently on giving them an older dose of four. Among Stockholmers who are 65 years or older, 59 percent have received four doses of covid vaccine. For the group 80+, the corresponding figure is just over 70 percent.
