Sleep medication not tailored to women: ‘As if an elephant had walked over me’

Sleep medication not tailored to women As if an elephant

Women sleep worse than men. This is evident from a large study by the Brain Foundation (2017). 62 percent of women report sleeping poorly, compared to 38 percent of men. Women also have more difficulty falling asleep than men, this difference starts from puberty (14-17 years).

Women use sleeping medications more often than men. This is evident from a 2020 study among 1.1 million people in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. In the age group of 26-40 years, 8.6 percent of women use sleeping medication compared to 5.2 percent of men. At ages 65+, the difference is even greater: 17.5 percent women and 6.3 percent men.
