SIU investigating after man 71 injured in Simcoe collision

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is asking the public for information related to an incident on Oct. 4 in Simcoe in which a 71-year-old man was seriously injured.

Preliminary information released by the SIU on Thursday indicates an OPP officer was driving a cruiser in the area of ​​Queen Street North and Cedar Street at about 9 am when he “became aware of a vehicle of interest.”

The officer attempted to drive a traffic stop of the BMW but the driver hit the police cruiser and another vehicle before speeding away.

According to the SIU, the BMW driver was involved in another collision, with a Chevrolet Impala, a short distance away, in the area of ​​100 block Queen Street North. The incident occurred near an elementary school.

The driver of the Impala suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
