Sitting your child in the shopping cart can be dangerous, for two reasons

Sitting your child in the shopping cart can be dangerous

If you put your child in the shopping cart while you are shopping at the supermarket, be careful and think about this before putting them in it. A doctor warns of the risks for children.

When you go shopping at the supermarket, you can’t push the shopping cart and the stroller at the same time, nor can you hold your baby. Sitting him facing us in the shopping cart is therefore the solution found by all parents. They can thus make their purchases without worrying about the youngest who has fun rolling the cans on the shelves, or who runs in the opposite direction of travel. And then, generally, the children enjoy this little shopping cart ride. But according to a doctor, aka @docteurTiktok on social networks, shopping carts are not safe for children who expose themselves to two major risks, which we do not necessarily suspect as parents.

The first risk concerns children who are not seated correctly in the shopping cart, especially when they feel a little tired, rest their head on the bar or are a little twisted on the seat. “In Ohio, the Columbus hospital recorded all shopping cart accidents among children and in one year, there were 24,000 visits to the emergency room, or 66 cases per day,” explains the Doctor from Tiktok. Most of the time, it was head trauma due to a fall from a shopping cart or a collision.

The second risk this time concerns all children since it is a hygiene problem. In fact, the shopping cart bar is touched by everyone’s hands (not always clean) all day long, and therefore presents a bacterial risk. Many researchers have also taken bacteriological samples from the handles of shopping carts. “In most cases, fecal bacteria were found, such asEscherichia coli which can be responsible for gastroenteritis, or even septicemia in children”, specifies the doctor.

The next time you go to the supermarket with your child, remember to clean the shopping cart bar before putting them in and make sure they are well positioned, or always stay close to them. Some supermarkets also offer small carts to make shopping time even more fun and risk-free. At Leclerc for example: the child is seated in a small car and fastened with a belt. The shopping cart is on top. Practical for shopping!
