Silina takes over in Latvia

Former Minister of Social Affairs Evika Silina has been approved by the Parliament of Latvia as the country’s new Prime Minister.

“I believe in Latvia and the potential of the people. Thank you to the saiema (parliament) for showing confidence in my government,” she herself writes on X, formerly Twitter, after being approved by 53 votes to 29 on Friday.

Silina succeeds Krisjanis Karins, who chose to submit his resignation after cooperation difficulties in the coalition government last summer. However, he continues to have a role in the new government, but now as foreign minister.

Silina, 48, will become the second woman prime minister of Latvia, after Laimdota Straujuma, who ruled from 2014-16.
