The Terrible Childrena subversive novel by Jean Cocteau from 1929, was transcribed to music by the pope of American minimalism Philip Glass in 1996. This opera for four voices, three pianos and a narrator, travels across France in an unpublished production by La co[opéra]tive. This collective, which brings together six French national stages to promote opera in the provinces, has given carte blanche to the French director Phia Ménard. It replaces children’s games with virtual reality headsets and moves the plot to a retirement home.
