Modo wants to sign Mattias Norlinder – with the help of the supporters.
It has been met with anger.
“Tasteless,” writes one user.
It is no big secret that Modo worked for a long time to bring Mattias Norlinder home. Backen got his breakthrough in Modo in the 2019/2020 season, but left a couple of years later, after being in Frölunda, to play in the NHL.
Turned to the fans
In the last two years, however, Norlinder has only been allowed to play in the AHL, and Modo has been clear that they are happy to sign the player if he decides to return home. And now it seems possible. Norlinder has trained with Modo during the summer, and now the club announces that there is mutual interest in a transfer. But there is a small catch.
According to the club, help is needed for sports director Henrik Gradin to be able to carry out the signing, and several sponsors have already announced that they can contribute to a collection of the player. But in addition, they ask for help from the supporters to row everything into port.
– We would very much like to see him in our squad, but we currently do not have room for it in our budget. Therefore, we are turning to all MoDoiters out in the country who can think of helping. I believe and hope that we can solve this together, says Henrik Gradin to the club’s website.
Great anger
It is not the first time a Swedish club asks for money from its supporters to complete the signing, and Modo’s requests from the supporters have not been well received. Several Modo supporters have, on social media, instead directed the supporters to donate money to Modotifo, and many also believe that the signing of Norlinder is probably already complete.
On social media, Modo is now seen hard by both his own supporters, but also by supporters of other teams. Many believe that it is strange that the fundraising initiative is by the club, and not by the club’s supporters.
“You have a turnover of just over SEK 170 million and have over SEK 28 million in equity. Tasteless,” writes one user.
“Of course he is already ready. Something else is not conceivable,” writes another.
“This didn’t turn out well, MoDo. Redo, do right. Norlinder is already ready. Saving maybe a few hundred thousand on this is not entirely fresh when everyone knows that Norlinder is playing in MoDo this fall no matter what,” writes a third.
However, the collection seems to have yielded results. After just a few hours, the supporter collection reached over 250,000 kroner, and thus a quarter of the goal of one million kroner.
