#SessionLive with Melingo and zoom on the Nyege Nyege festival (Uganda) with the artist Turkana

Melingo opens the show in the #SessionLive where the Argentinian artist will play 2 tracks with pianist Juan Pablo Gallardo. Then presentation of the 2022 edition of the Les Escales festival in St Nazaire with a zoom on a guest festival: the Ugandan Nyege Nyege.

Please is an anthology to celebrate the surrealist universe of Melingo through his discography from 1998 to 2016: quirky tangos, underworld romances and vagabond songs.

These 23 tracks, most of them already hits, are chiseled by the ultimate in musicians… First and foremost, the faithful multi-instrumentalist Mohammed Habbibi Guerrabut also the moving brothers Floresthe guitarist Diego Trosman and so many others…: thus classified by families, one can only let oneself be carried away by these nodding heroes, Pasolinians at will, always on the wire of the dagger and the caress, of the duel and the dance.

To tell about Melingo, is to tell a telescoping of a thousand lives and times in a single man. It is an attempt to synthesize a kaleidoscope of geographies as were the beginnings of tango in the mouth of the Rio de la Plata at the end of the 19th century, because the character is the architect of a cosmopolitan mythology, of which he himself is the interpreter.

Melingo.

Clarinetist, singer-storyteller, actor, composer, trained in classical and opera, fond of Charles Mingus and of Duke Ellington, Melingo was born in 1957 in Parque Patricios, a working-class neighborhood that is a hotspot for tango and milongas. A conservatory graduate, but quickly turned into a punk rocker, Melingo would become a sort of Argentinian incarnation of a Paolo Conteof a Tom Waits or a Nick Cave to which it has often been compared. This total character, steeped in poetry, has had several lives as an artist and has surfed in several territories. In 1978, it was the dictatorship in Argentina, he was with Milton Nascimento in Brazil. In the 1980s, he founded the pioneering Argentinian rock band The bone Abuelos de la Nada (Les Grands-pères du Néant), tours with the national rock star Charlie Garciaand co-founded LosTwist in 1982. He fell into the pot of the Spanish movida in 1987 where with his group Lions in Lovehe crunches life at both ends… Ten years later, and after some 17 albums to his credit in 1997, he turns to tango, forging a rough style, very much his own and for which he opens a new chapter. in the history of the most original genre.

Then we receive turkanaDJ producer, originally from South Sudan and Jerome Gaboriaufestival programmer Stopovers in St-Nazaire which celebrates its 30th anniversary.

It’s around the Nyege Nyege festival that turkana articulated. A Ugandan festival which, since 2015, offers a new and electronic vision of African music. Festival and record label.

The Nyege Nyege is one of the festivals that take part in the 30th anniversary of Stopovers in Saint-Nazaire (France), Jerome Gaboriauprogrammer will tell us about the concept Stopovers Globe-Trotter.

turkana is a DJ and producer, she delivers techno that beats! Anita Kevin is a South Sudanese artist who grew up in a refugee camp in Kakuma, in the Turkana region of Kenya. This is where she got her stage name. First fascinated by fashion, she received an invitation to participate in a workshop organized by the structure Femme Electronic, under the impetus of the Ugandan DJ Rachael. Today, they form the 4manysisters crew, in addition to Decay and Hibotep. With talent and humility, they defend the place of African women in electronic music, without even going through the mainstream box. Turkana joins the Anti-Mass collective and quickly finds its place within the essential Nyege Nyege Festival. Through a “hard dance” style where visceral techno and experimental African sounds collide, Turkana, who likes to attack the dancefloor without compromise but always with ferocity and grace, has definitely joined the gang of underground figures of Kampala (capital of Uganda). It is programmed in partnership with the Nyege Nyege Festival (Uganda).

The connections with the traditional Ugandan scene and the activists of the Kampalese nights remain inseparable from the effervescence which animates the project.

Programmed in partnership with the Nyege Nyege Festival (Uganda). High place of the avant-garde of electronic music, Nyege Nyege is both label, incubator and organizer of one of the most exciting festivals on the African continent.

Aysay Yoldas/Fri (Denmark/Turkey) in partnership with the Danish hall Alice CPH.

AySay perfectly embodies the diversity and mix of cultures that permeate current Danish society. The group sings in Danish, Turkish and Kurdish, and offers mixed music, tinged with folk and pop rock with psychedelic accents.

Luna Ersahin, the lead singer, herself from two cultures – Danish and Kurdish – inspires and embodies the musicality of the group, between East and West. Her captivating voice is enhanced by the saz and the darbuka, two traditional instruments found in Turkey and Kurdistan. Electronic instruments, percussion, drums and guitar bring a contemporary dimension to AySay’s elegant and magnetic compositions, both full of nostalgia and hope.

A very nice musical discovery to transport yourself to an imaginary country, somewhere between northern Europe and the Middle East!

Programmed in partnership with the contemporary music hall ALICE cph (Denmark), a meeting place for curious ears and open minds. ALICE programs music from all walks of life, from folk to jazz/improv, from electronic music to metal, from avant-garde to sound art.

Inspired in disorder by Prince, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Jones, Michael Jackson and Tyler, The Creator, KABEAUSHÉ creates a sound and a universe of its own, an atypical project imbued with pop and R’n’B sensibilities. Futuristic pop by the way would probably be the best way to describe his music, like a rare bird in the African musical landscape. Both concert and performance, KABEAUSHÉ is a hybrid project developed for months in Kampala with an ultra-creative team, which is reminiscent of a certain Mykki Blanco in his early days. The artist likes to shake up the codes and lead the public into a frenzy of hypnotic dance to better embark him in his world, a world that belongs only to him!

The release of Kabeaushé’s first album is scheduled for summer 2022.

Programmed in partnership with the Nyege Nyege Festival (Uganda). High place of the avant-garde of electronic music, Nyege Nyege is both label, incubator and organizer of one of the most exciting festivals on the African continent.
