Veteran Republican Senator Mitt Romney will not seek re-election in the 2024 congressional elections, US media reports.

In a video statement published on Wednesday, the 76-year-old Romney says he wants to make room for “a new generation of leaders” and calls on the top candidates for next year’s presidential election Joe Biden81, and Donald Trump77, to do the same.

In his video message, Romney defined that critical issues for the United States include the growth of the national debt and the climate crisis, says news channel CNN.

– President Biden and not former President Trump will lead their parties to solve these problems, Romney said according to CNN.

Romney said he would be well over 80 by the end of next term.

– The time has simply come for a new generation of leaders. They have to make the decisions that define what kind of world they will live in, Romney stated of The New York Times by.

Romney is known as a critic of Donald Trump. Among other things, he voted as the only Republican senator against Trump in February 2020, when the Senate voted on impeachment charges. It was about whether Trump pressured Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden act in exchange for military smoke. Romney voted against Trump on abuse of power charges, but found him not guilty of obstruction of Congress.

Trump called Romney’s retirement “fantastic news for America.” Trump commented on the matter in a message he published on social media.

In the United States, the high age of political leadership has recently sparked debate.

Romney was the Republican presidential candidate in 2012. At that time, the Democrats Barack Obama was elected to his second term of office.
