Seasonal allergy: the oligo you need

Seasonal allergy the oligo you need

Itchy nose, cascading sneezes, itchy eyes, wheezing breathing: the pollen season brings its share of inconvenience. Symptoms that can be alleviated with certain trace elements.

Oligotherapy can be used to prevent or compensate for a deficit in trace elements but also to obtain a therapeutic effect. In case of pollen allergy during periods of strong pollen release (see the pollen map), trace elements limit inflammatory reactions and strengthen the body’s resistance to allergens.

The antiallergic trace element: manganese

“The antiallergic trace element par excellence is manganese” explains Jean-Noël Périn, expert pharmacist from the GRANIONS Laboratory. Manganese actually inhibits the secretion of histamine, one of the chemical messengers released by the immune system during allergic reactions.

This trace element is also a co-factor of many enzymes that stimulate cell production. It thus helps to strengthen the mucous membranes strained when there is presence of allergens. “Its function of modifying the allergic terrain makes it essential” adds the pharmacist.

In combination: zinc or copper

Zinc is one of the most protective trace elements in the body because it is involved in some 200 body reactions, especially those that stimulate immunity. Without it, we cannot efficiently multiply cells (therefore white blood cells) or synthesize proteins (therefore antibodies).

The copper is mainly known for its anti-infectious properties and its barrier effect against winter ailments. But we often forget that it is also a powerful anti-inflammatory and a regulator of immune function: it stimulates our natural defenses against foreign agents, including allergens.

How do we take them?

  • Ideally, manganese should be taken as a cure at the end of winter, to prevent the arrival of pollens. But it can also be taken as a basic treatment during the pollen season or in addition to a antihistamine treatment.
  • Trace elements are found in several forms (drinkable ampoules, tablets) to be taken daily. Consult your pharmacist for the dosage.
  • “Naturally present in the body, trace elements do not cause reactions or adverse effects at the required dosages, nor toxicity over the long term” explains the pharmacist.
  • It is recommended to take trace elements on an empty stomach or 10 minutes before a meal for better absorption in the digestive tract. If you take several, space the takes 15 to 20 minutes to avoid any competition between them.
