Scandinavian Star survivors sue authorities

Last Friday, the Norwegian Maritime Administration announced that it rejects the demand for compensation from the 20 survivors and eleven relatives. The demand was for 450,000 Danish kroner each.

— It was a very sad news. They had hopes of being taken seriously, and they don’t feel that they have been, says lawyer Mads Pramming.

The next step will be to sue the Swedish Maritime Administration, he adds.

— That is the only option left.

The claim for compensation was raised after an investigation in 2022, ordered by the Ministry of Economy, revealed that the Maritime Administration did not carry out a regular check of the ferry before it was released from the port in Denmark with passengers.

Of 482 people on board, 159 lost their lives when the ferry caught fire outside Lysekil, en route from Oslo to Denmark’s Fredrikshamn. Several investigations have tried to map the cause of the fire.
