Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Iran’s capital Tehran reopened on Wednesday after being closed for seven years, Iranian state media reported.

Iran and Saudi Arabia have frosted over the frozen diplomatic relations caused by, among other things, developments in the civil war in Yemen.

Diplomatic exchanges were also halted entirely when Saudi Arabia executed Shiite religious leader and regime critic Nimr al-Nimr in 2016. The execution sparked anger in Iran and the Saudi embassy in Tehran was attacked by protesters.

But contacts have slowly resumed with high-level meetings with representatives of both countries following Chinese mediation.

In June, the Iranian embassy in Saudi Arabia opened at a flag ceremony. But the opening of the Saudi embassy had not been confirmed by Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.
