Sarah Sjöström exceeded all expectations this summer.
When the Swedish swimming queen won double Olympic gold in Paris.
But despite that, she can’t win the Bragdguldet this year, we explain why.
2024 has been an absolutely fantastic year for the Swedish swimming star Sarah Sjostrom. This summer, the 31-year-old won two Olympic golds during the Summer Olympics in Paris, her fifth Olympics in her career.
Sjöström is stopped
Sjöström wrote blue and yellow sports history as the first Swedish woman and the third Swedish swimmer of all time to win double Olympic gold. Most impressive was the gold medal in the 100 meter freestyle, a distance she didn’t even want to compete in but changed her mind at the last moment.
But despite Sarah becoming Sweden’s top athlete in the Olympics, she is stopped from winning the Gold Medal for 2024. The prestigious award, which is actually called Svenska Dagbladet’s Gold Medal, is awarded to the person who has stood for the year’s best performance in Swedish sports.

In 2023, Bragdguldet went to Daniel Ståhl for her impressive WC gold but the reason why Sarah Sjöström cannot win this year is very simple. She has already been awarded the prestigious award twice during her career, both in 2015 and 2017.
Sarah can’t win
A Swedish athlete cannot win the Bragdguldet more than twice.
– Sarah is out, because she has already won it twice. She can’t win again, it says so in the rules. It has always been like that, explains the Olympic hero Annette Norbergwho sits in the bragduryn, for Sportbibeln.
– Sarah’s gold in the 100 meters was so incredibly impressive. From not even applying to going and winning. Wow!

Bragdjuryn has previously discussed changing this rule, but then came to the conclusion of maintaining the limit of two bragdjuryn for a Swedish athlete. In addition to Sjöström, icons such as Ingemar Stenmark (1975, 1978), Björn Borg (1974, 1978) and Anja Pärson (2006, 2007) awarded the Bragdguldet on two occasions.
Bragdguldet is awarded on the first Tuesday in December each year, in 2024 it will be December 3.
