Säpo: Still high terrorist threat in 2024

The terrorist threat level in Sweden is still a four on a five-point scale. A decision made by the Security Police Chief on January 7.

The fact that the threat is still considered high is due, among other things, to increasing uncertainty factors, NCT believes.

– Despite the sometimes dramatic development of events in 2023, this year’s overall assessment does not differ significantly from last year’s. But the uncertainty factors have become greater and we know that events that draw attention can have a large effect, which contributes to the terror threat level being assessed as still high, says Ahn-Za Hagström, director of NCT, in a press release.

NCT states that the main threat of attacks against Sweden in 2024 comes from actors who act based on violent Islamism, alternatively violent right-wing extremism.

– In 2023, Sweden has been a designated target for international Islamist organizations, from previously being assessed as a legitimate target along with many other Western countries, says Ahn-Za Hagström.
