“At Samsung, we believe we have environmental responsibilities to our consumers and our planet, while continuing to deliver high-end technologies to users with confidence. Within the scope of the ‘Eco-Package’ project, which was renewed this year and allows to transform the packaging of television products into versatile household items, we use 90% less ink in packaging. During production, we completely eliminate the use of staples. In addition, we have further developed our SolarCell Remote Control product, which eliminates battery waste thanks to its built-in solar panels, and designed it to be used in all our 2022 model televisions.

Thanks to the SolarCell Remote Control, we have managed to save 100 million batteries a year from being waste. Within the scope of the Eco-Package Project, our recyclable television boxes were transformed into brand new functional and decorative designs with zero waste in the hands of valuable designers. We call it upcycling because we aim to transform our unique televisions, which have completed their useful life, into new products that will contribute to our daily lives by adding intellectual design elements to our TV boxes that have been brought to your homes. We are very excited and proud to see the works that emerged as a result of the project we have implemented in line with our vision of returning to nature.”

The explanations of those who revived the product packaging to be discarded with Samsung through upcycling were as follows:

HEwkü Baştaş: As part of the Samsung Eco-Package project, Öykü Baştaş has designed modules that can turn into furniture such as sitting units and coffee tables by combining cardboard surfaces in different ways. Continuing her work in the fields of fashion and architecture, Öykü travels frequently and draws inspiration from different cities around the world. The story started with the design idea with cardboards collected for recycling on the streets of New York.

The cardboards placed on top of each other turn into a strong surface and reach a capacity that can carry people. In this direction, Öykü used the layering technique in its design. Story; cardboard surfaces, instead of glue; It aimed to minimize its carbon footprint by combining it with woven strips of different colors. The modules are combined with green stripes when side by side, and pink stripes when overlapping.

Beryl Ates: Within the scope of the Samsung Eco-Package Project, Beril Ateş designed an installation that points to endangered fish by transforming television boxes. Artist Beril Ateş attaches importance to works that raise awareness about the sea pollution we cause with the increase in the amount of garbage in the world and the gradual decrease in the population of living things in the waters. For his design, Beril wanted to sculpt fish figures inspired by the strong structure of Samsung television boxes.

After painting the fish figures he cut out of the boxes, he sewed their mouths through the holes he made on the cardboard, aiming to convey a secret message with sea pollution and endangered fish. At the same time, with the unifying power of this rope, it provided a three-dimensional effect where we can look at the fish from both sides. Beril’s idea that raises awareness about the ocean and sea life; In Samsung’s 2022 televisions and monitors, digital products and remote controls; coincides with the use of recycled resin from ‘ocean-bound plastic’.

Principle White: As part of the Samsung Eco-Package project, İlke Beyaz designed a pentagonal prism lighting design by evaluating television boxes. Ilke Beyaz creates a social impact through design with his hand-woven rug brand Figure, which combines craft knowledge and women’s labor.

Principle; With its design, it aims to illuminate the tradition of weaving, which has remained in the dark with the spread of mechanization today, and to be a light for craftswomen. Principle; 12 pentagonal surfaces obtained from Samsung television boxes; They sewed them together with wool left over from looms and colored with completely natural root dye. This method he uses for assembling corresponds to Samsung’s environmentally friendly packaging approach that does not use staples.

Ayşe Yılmaz, Ottan Studio: Ottan Studio Founder Ayşe Yılmaz has designed a modular installation that can be used in different functions than television boxes and creates various visual effects as part of the Samsung Eco-Package project. Ottan Studio is a social enterprise that designs and manufactures circular bio-composite materials from food and agricultural waste for the good of humanity and the environment.

Ayşe Yılmaz, on her design, “How can we transform cardboard into impressive surface and product designs with a practical and sustainable method?” It started with a question. The fact that Ayşe uses no adhesives or colorants in her design supports Samsung’s approach to reducing carbon footprints by using 90% less ink in new television boxes.

Kubilay Ercelep & Serap Kathreemaz, Architecture for All AssociationI: As part of the Samsung Eco-Package project, Kubilay Ercelep & Serap Kaçmaz, on behalf of the Architecture for All Association, designed an installation that can be used for different functions such as a coffee table and a storage area with triangular prisms they produced from television boxes. The Architecture for All Association is a platform where volunteer students and professionals come together to produce creative solutions to social problems in the fields of architecture and design.

Kubilay and Serap; He cut a television box and formed 3 triangular prisms. In order for the prisms to close and gain volume, they first drilled holes on the surfaces. Connecting these holes with waste threads; It corresponds to Samsung’s staple-free packaging approach that promotes environmental sustainability.

Repairers Club: As part of the Samsung Eco-Package project, the Repairers Club developed a public space furniture concept that offers an environmentally friendly and playful approach to socializing practices on the street. With the focus of repair, production and sharing, the Repairers Club develops creative projects that create a dialogue between the city and the people.

In this direction, the Repairers Club designed a temporary public space where people who are good for each other can come together. When the two module designs come together, it creates a mini public space. This area can be transformed into a table, chaise longue or a sitting unit with a simple movement mechanism.

The Repairers Club also tried to achieve the most efficient result by using the folds of Samsung television boxes without creating any waste in the production process. At the same time, it maintained an environmentally friendly approach by using the waste cardboards that were removed during production for the carrier of the modules.”
