Roger Rönnberg’s neat pass to Frölundastjärnan after breaking a new club record: “Then Roger came forward…”

You just have to love someone like Roger Rönnberg.
Max Friberg now reveals what happened after he broke the club record in Frölunda.
– I was not receptive to that comment at the time, he says in the Hockeypuls podcast.

Frölunda has lost the “Captain of the Captains” in the dressing room then the eternal man Joel Lundqvist chose to end his career after so many seasons for the Gothenburg team. The one who will shoulder his mantle and take over the responsibility as the new team captain Max Friberg.

Record in Frölunda

The 30-year-old moved to Gothenburg in 2017 and is now entering his seventh season for Frölunda. This time it will be with a C on the chest and really big skates to fill after Lundqvist’s departure.

Friberg has long been seen as one of the most fit hockey players in the SHL and he has shown that time and time again during the preseason. Frölundastjärnan currently holds the club record in the annual and prestigious Cooper test.

Rönnberg’s joke

It was in the summer of 2020 that Friberg ran the fastest time ever in the club’s history by finishing in 10.07 minutes. Although he himself claims that he ran much faster than that.
– I think I was down to 10.02. It was windless outside, good conditions. I have had 10.07 and 10.08 in recent years, he says in the podcast Hockeypuls.
“10.07… Håkan Mild did it backwards in 2001”, as the football profile Stefan Lundin wrote on Twitter in connection with the Cooper test 2020.

The dream limit is of course to go under 10 minutes, which of course no one in Frölunda has ever succeeded in doing. Friberg also reveals the coach Roger Rönnberg’s killer pass when he came close to achieving that feat.
– When I ran my best race, 10.02, then Roger came forward and said: “It would have been good to get someone under 10”. I wasn’t receptive to that comment at the time, but it was a bit of fun, says Friberg with a laugh in the podcast.
– But that’s the limit I see in front of me, it would have been fun to be under it at some point.

It is mainly Max Friberg and Joel Lundqvist who agreed in the pre-season to be the best-trained player in Frölunda’s dressing room. But now Friberg sees competition coming from younger quarters.
– David Edstrom presses on. We have run that beautiful Bragebacken a couple of times this summer and there he is ahead of me. He owns it. In terms of fitness, he is the closest. Erik Borg is also good at running. In the gym, it is quite shared. I’m quite even and have a high level in many things, but I’m probably not the best in any branch, Friberg admits in the interview.
