Roger Pontare is sentenced to two months in prison for drunk driving

The artist Roger Pontare woke up in a hotel room after a party night in Umeå sometime in January. Despite having drunk a lot of alcohol the day before, he still chose to get in the car towards Örnsköldsvik.

Getting home that day cost Roger Pontare a two-month prison sentence for aggravated drunk driving.

When he was stopped, he had almost 1.7 percent alcohol in his blood. He had then driven 11 miles along the E4 and had plans to ride the last 15 miles to Bjuråker as well.

A witness who drove behind Pontare on the E4 says that he wobbled, drove towards the one-way and also drove into a snow-covered refug, which caused the car to rise so much that it looked like it was going to overturn.

“Told me to take a chance”

Ångermanland’s district court justifies the prison sentence with the fact that he was well aware of how much he had drunk the day before, but that he “felt despite this that he had to take a chance”.

To SVT Pontare has previously said about the incident that he considered calming down and not going home, but that it was “far too strong forces that just told me to take a chance and simply go home”.
