Robin Olsen attacked when City won league gold

The incident occurred when the league gold had been secured and the supporters stormed the pitch at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester.

Away team Aston Villas coach Steven Gerrard told afterwards about the incident and was in the same vein critical of the safety rules in the football arena.

– The answer is no. My goalkeeper was attacked, Gerrard said according to the sports site The Athletic on the question of whether his players had time to get to the locker room safely.

Some hour after the final whistle, Manchester City launched an investigation into the incident.

“Manchester City sincerely apologize to Aston Villas goalkeeper Robin Olsen who was attacked after the final whistle during today’s match,” the club wrote in a press release.

“Once the guilty individual has been identified, he or she will be suspended for life,” it continues.

According to The Athletic Aston Villa, however, are unlikely to lodge a formal complaint with the Premier League. It is unclear how, or if, Robin Olsen was injured in connection with the incident.

The match between Manchester City and Aston Villa, which ended 3-2, was Robin Olsen’s league debut for the Birmingham team.
