Botkyrka in southern Stockholm has put up a warning sign with a squirrel in order for people to slow down on a road, where residents have testified about squirrels being hit, writes the newspaper Mitt i.

Now the municipality risks a fine instead.

The warning sign with the squirrel is illegal, according to the Swedish Transport Agency. The only animals that are currently allowed to be used in combination with a warning sign are deer, cattle (cow), horse, reindeer, sheep and wild boar, according to the authority’s regulations.
