Release postponed to the end of 2024 – Studio Wildcard explains what’s next

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

The highly anticipated dinosaur sequel ARK 2 will not be released this year as planned. Instead, there is a remaster of ARK: Surival Evolved.

What’s going on at Studio Wildcard? In a blog post on the afternoon of March 31 local time, the studio announced its plans for the coming year. And that should be quite a disappointment for all fans who are looking forward to a sequel to the dinosaur game ARK: Survival Evolved.

Because ARK 2 will not appear this year as planned, but only at the end of 2024.

ARK 2 won’t come until the end of 2024

Why is ARK 2 being postponed? As Studio Wildcard explains, it takes more time to get used to Unreal Engine 5 to take full advantage of the new technology. The launch of the sequel will therefore be postponed to the end of 2024.

According to the blog post, it was a difficult decision, but we are confident that we did the right thing.

Our goal is to make ARK 2 the best game possible and to provide players with a truly exceptional and rewarding experience. The Unreal Engine 5 is incredible new technology for us (and all other developers), and we want to take full advantage of this cutting-edge technology as we at Studio Wildcard develop a game of unprecedented scale.

What’s next? Apart from the changed release, not too much should change for the time being. ARK 2 will continue to appear as an exclusive for Xbox, Game Pass and the Windows distribution platforms. A topless Vin Diesel will probably also be there.

Studio Wildcard announces that they want to keep fans up to date and involve them in the development processes. Assets from ARK 2 are to be shown regularly in the coming months. Gameplay, screenshots or even videos will probably no longer be available this year.

Instead, the studio is putting fans off with a remaster of the original Ark: Survival Evolved.

Instead of ARK 2 there is Ark: Survival Ascended

What is this remaster? The next-gen remaster of the first ARK is said to be called “ARK: Survival Ascended” and will be released in August 2023 for Xbox Series S/X, PC and PlayStation 5 – if it is not postponed.

The special feature: The remaster, like the postponed sequel, should use Unreal Engine 5 technology. According to the studio, there are two reasons for this:

  • For one thing, the remaster wants to develop a deeper understanding of the new technologies and test some of the “riskier” technical advances.
  • On the other hand, ARK 2 should come with some changes compared to the original, which are probably not for everyone. The studio cites a Souls-like combat system with only primitive weapons, a strict 3rd-person limitation, and an overall more serious tone. So that all players get their money’s worth, there should be a next-gen version of the original that fans should be able to enjoy for years to come.
  • How much does ARK: Survival Ascended cost? For Xbox and PC players, the remaster should only be available as an “ARK Respawned Bundle” with the sequel ARK 2. For $49.99, players will then get the remaster and one-month access to the ARK 2 closed beta.

After a year, ARK: Survival Ascended and ARK 2 will be sold separately. For PS5 devotees, the remaster will be available as a standalone and will cost $39.99.

Additionally, there will be two $19.99 expansions that will be sold separately on all platforms.

  • the “Explorer’s Pass” with the expansions “Scorched Earth”, “Aberration (coming in late 2023) and “Extinction” (early 2024)
  • the “Genesis Pass” with “Genesis Part 1 and 2” (available in 2024)
