Rats and screeching seagulls drive Utrecht residents to despair Consider

The municipality of Utrecht says it is aware of the nuisance, including at the Leidsekade. “Pests as a result of waste that is incorrectly presented or dumped is a great annoyance for residents, entrepreneurs and visitors to our city.”

Utrecht is taking various measures to tackle the problem. “We sweep daily, clean up waste (also based on reports), encourage residents and businesses to properly dispose of their waste where we can, and have a city-wide feed ban that helps reduce available food for rats. ”

The municipality also tackles the population. “We have caught a large number of rats and several traps have been set up. Furthermore, we always look at places where the rats can live/hide and whether we can tackle them, for example in cellars. We also check the sewer, which is around Westplein. already closed.” Part of the Westplein will also be tackled soon. “We take the rat nuisance into account when reclassifying.”

But: “Despite all efforts, the nuisance remains.” Alderman Susanne Schilderman therefore appeals to residents. “Don’t leave your waste next to the container. And if you see a bag? Report it and we’ll come and solve it!”
