Psychologist Dan Katz wants to see a change in the law: “Risks their lives”

After Kalla fakta’s review of new spiritual actors who treat serious diseases, the demands to review the legislation are growing.
29-year-old Lova was persuaded by a medium to opt out of psychiatric care – and it would cost her her life.

– People are treated incorrectly, or they receive no treatment at all. In some cases, they are tricked into believing that their problems are due to something else entirely. The worst consequence is that you risk their lives, says psychologist and psychotherapist Dan Katz.

In 2019, a government investigation was carried out which underlined the importance of tightening the law, so that people outside the healthcare system are prohibited from treating all serious mental and somatic illnesses.

But that bill has been in the drawer ever since.

In his work, Dan Katz has seen repeated examples of people doing very badly.

– It is thus free for anyone to treat, for example, severe depression, a psychosis or an eating disorder, with any methods. In the worst case, you risk the life of your patient, and there is no obstacle in the law against doing this. Nor can they be prosecuted for it in any way, says Dan Katz, licensed psychologist and psychotherapist.

The government does not want to tighten the law

In a comment to Kalla fakta, the Minister of Health, Acko Ankarberg Johansson, said that the government follows Ivo’s supervision but has no intention of tightening the law.

But psychologist Dan Katz doesn’t buy the minister’s answer.

– It indicates that they did not actually familiarize themselves with the current legislation. Ivo has absolutely no opportunity to do anything about this type of business. There are basically no obstacles to an ordinary layman or someone who believes in very strange theories being able to give completely grotesque advice to people who are very fragile, he says.
