She’s sober now, and her life is on the mend again. As if adoption would put an end to the trauma, she finds a new child in need of her care in 9-year-old Russian girl Esther (Esther).

However, since this is orphan and not Suddenly Family, the couple is quickly faced with greater challenges than just gaining the trust of a girl with a language barrier. Esther turns out to be an uncanny addition to the household, with bone-breaking consequences for their environment.

Orphan offers multi-layered horror horror with a top ensemble

Orphan relies far less on jump scares than Vera Farmiga’s various Conjuring films. The horror of the film by director Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows) arises on the one hand from the unpredictable presence of Esther. This combines numerous types of characters from different genres, sometimes innocent bad child, sometimes disturbing femme fatale, sometimes ghostly presence.

Isabelle Fuhrman, with the help of David Leslie Johnson’s screenplay, makes one hook after the other, so that we can can never be sure what Esther will do next. It’s a fantastically versatile performance in an ensemble not to be scoffed at.

on the other hand the horror is already in this family, long before Esther is at the door. At its core, Orphan is a drama about a family’s repressed trauma and a married couple’s unresolved conflicts. The psychic abysses that we see in Orphan are already there. All it takes is someone with way too much curiosity to explore them. That’s where Esther comes in.
