Psychiatrists prescribed abnormal amounts of drugs

A psychiatrist in Västerbotten has been examined by the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate (Ivo) for having prescribed large amounts of narcotic drugs to his patients, reports SVT Nyheter.

The man has also prescribed drugs with “high doses and inappropriate combinations” to himself with reference to sleep problems.

The doctor now gets a three-year probationary period by decision of the Health and Medical Care Responsibility Committee, according to SVT.

The investigation began after he prescribed drug-classified medicine based on a telephone conversation with a suicidal person. Among other things, he has also prescribed large amounts of a preparation with benzodiazepines to another patient without meeting him and despite the fact that previous prescriptions have not yet expired.

According to Ivo, the psychiatrist has several times exposed his patients to the risk of becoming addicted.
