It turned violent when thousands of protesters clashed with police outside Vice President Cristina Kirchner’s home in Buenos Aires on Saturday evening.

The protesters stormed the police cordons and the police deployed water cannons. At least five police officers were injured and four protesters were arrested, the BBC reports.

The protesters have been gathering outside Kirchner’s residence for several days to show their support during the ongoing trial. She is charged with corruption during the time she was Argentina’s president from 2007-2015, and prosecutors are demanding twelve years in prison and that 69-year-old Kirchner be barred from all political positions for life if she is convicted.

The case has been in court since 2019, and over a hundred witnesses have appeared. But the trial had to take a longer break during the pandemic.

If convicted, however, Kirchner will not have to serve time behind bars, as a senator she has parliamentary immunity.
